Singapore Is The World's Most Emotionless Society? Seriously?

singapore is world's most emotionless society
Recently, Gallup, US-based Pollster released the result of a Poll from 152 countries to analyse how people feel about their lives. And you know what? Singapore (the little red dot that I am currently staying) deemed to be the most emotionless in the world! Seriously?

Hmmm... come and think of it, I kind of agree with result as most Singaporean are perceived to be more serious, more deserved and more conservative in nature. Having said that, on second thought, just like any other poll, such findings is not conclusive and I am pretty sure that I've chanced upon a fair share of locals here who are full of emotion and expression! ;-)

Coffee and Internet, any good for your health?

While I am blogging my way through this virtual world, I am sure most of you are chilling out or having great and fun time with your friends and family. It is just another staying home Saturday night for me and I am enjoying it.

Today, I am going to share 2 research reports (from newspaper) which I thought the findings contradicts to the conventional thinking.

Firstly, it is the coffee. As a coffee addict myself, I find that this research findings is quite astonishing, many a time I've been advised by others to cut down the intake of coffee as it's bad for health. I guess it's time to change our perception towards coffee now. From the recent publication of American journal Cancer Causes and Control, it was found that the more coffee you drink, the more you lower your risk of liver cancer. If you take 3 or more cups of coffee a day, you could lower your risk for up to 44 percent (as compared to a total abstainer).

One caveat though: it is applicable only to Singaporean Chinese! This study is from more than 63,00 ethnic Chinese aged 45 to 74 living in Singapore. This is an important findings as Liver Cancer is the fourth most common cancer in Singapore. Similar study is on it's way to find out the "relationship" between coffee and Colon cancer (which is the most common cancer in Singapore). Hope another piece of good news is on the way.

Secondly, it is the internet. I am sure internet has formed part and partial of our everyday life, we are constantly living in a inter-connected world, especially through the social networking sites. However, do you know that too much of internet use affects how we remember things? Researchers said that with the widespread use of search engine like Google and Yahoo! and online databases, it has affect the way people remember information.

In short, people are less likely to remember information that they think can be easily retrieved from the computer and/or internet. Of course, this is only the preliminary findings, further study is on it's way to provide more concrete support.

In any case, moderation is still the key, there is no issue for us to drink coffee or surf the internet moderately without becoming a serious addict.

Orchard Flash Flood And Causeway Jam! What's Next?

Yesterday, there were two disastrous incidents happened in Singapore, one is due to natural cause and the other is man made. Let's talk about the natural cause incident first, it's the flash flood in many areas of the city, the water even managed to penetrate into the well known shopping mall, Tanglin Mall (near the famous Orchard Road area) and force the mall to closed for operation.

Ever since the Orchard Road Flash Flood fiasco last year, whenever there is downpour, first thing that come to our mind is: Oh No, Orchard Road will be flooded again! I think the appropriate Authority need to work harder on this or else the next thing that will come to our mind when downpour is: Oh No, Tanglin Mall will be closed again!

Next, it's the man-made disaster, 7-hours traffic jam at both the causeways between Singapore to Malaysia (to and flo). This happened because Malaysia, out of nowhere,  decided to introduce the fingers scanning system (on top of the usual custom clearing procedure). Just imagine that everyone (I means everyone, including the drivers) need to get out of their cars/motorcycles and get their fingers scanned, get back to their vehicles and continue their journey!! Why can't the Authority figure it earlier that BIG JAM is expected? I guess at times, we just need to learn the hard way. Hope they learn their lesson!

Just like to highlight that, in life, disasters do happen, at times it's man-made and other times it's due to natural cause. We can't possibly control what is going to happen next in our life, but we can always choose how we react to it! STAY COOL AND STAY POSITIVE!

Right, so much for the disasters reporting from Great Little Moments Station (hehe)! One reminder for those who are coming to Singapore during these few days, do remember to bring along your umbrella and/or raincoat as storm and rain and flash flood is expected!

Singapore - The Unhappiest Workforce!

Wow! I read with disbelief that Singapore's working adult is ranked the unhappiest workforce in a poll conducted by Talent Management company, Lumesse. This survey polled about 4,000 employees from a wide variety of industries across 14 countries. In the report released yesterday, Singapore ranked poorest in the following area:
- Least enjoy going to work,
- Least loyal
- Least supportive workplaces

And "pay" does not even come into picture yet (in fact, Singapore ranked quite OK in terms of "pay"). So, what does it tell us generally? I deduced that happiness cannot be improved solely by monetization (a term commonly used in Internet Marketing world). In short, money does not equal happiness! full-stop.

So, what are we (or Singaporean) looking for to lead an happier working life? Since money has no part to play here, what is it then will make us feel happier? As usual, I always like to look at thing in a more positive way, I further deduced that most Singapore working adults are just not contented with what they have now, and always looks for ways to improve the quality of their working environment. This has directly caused the working adult here to have higher expectation of their employers. Thus, the low ranking!

Make sense?

In any case, happiness is just one of the emotion, no one can be happy forever (that can only happen in fairy tale of 70's!). Thus, what we all should be looking for is to be at ease with ourselves and enjoy the company of friends, family and colleagues around us.
